Penetration indicates how well ammunition can defeat different armor classes
No penetration
No damage through armor
Low penetration
Light bruise/bleed through armor
Medium penetration
Medium bruise/bleed through armor
High penetration
One-tap kill through armor
Key Stats Explained
Accuracy Modifier
Lower is better. Negative values mean improved accuracy while positive values indicate reduced accuracy.
Velocity
Higher values mean faster bullets, resulting in less bullet drop and travel time.
Armor Classes
Helmet: IIA, IIIA, IIIA+ Body: IIIA, IIIA+, III, III+, III++, IV Higher class means better protection.
Choosing Ammunition
1Match ammo to expected enemy armor level
2Balance penetration power and damage output
3Consider availability and cost for loadouts
4Tracer rounds reveal your position
5Higher Accuracy Modifier is better for long-range
Helmet Protection Levels
HG1
HG1 formerly NIJ Level IIA / NIJ Level II
Soft armor. Entry-level handgun protection. Rated for 9mm FMJ 124gr at 398 m/s (1306 fps) and .357 Mag JSP 158gr at 436 m/s (1430 fps).
HG2
HG2 formerly NIJ Level IIIA
Soft armor. Highest official NIJ handgun rating. Rated for 9mm FMJ 124gr at 448 m/s (1470 fps) and .44 Mag JHP 240gr at 436 m/s (1430 fps).
RF1/RR
RF1 / RR (Rifle Rated) formerly NIJ Level IIIA+
A Helmet made of Polyethylene and Composite Material. Rifle Resistance: 7.62x39 LC V50 > 2676 f/s. 5.56x45 (M193) V50 > 2986 f/s. 7.62x51 M80 NATO V0 > 2100 f/s. Fragments Protection: 17 gr. V50 > 2950 f/s (900 m/s). Mechanical Protection: U.S. Army GL-PD-09-04 STD.
NIJ Standards stop at HG2 for helmets. There is no official NIJ protection level above IIIA for helmets. Beyond HG2, the next tier is RR (Rifle Rated). RR is not an NIJ designation. It is a manufacturer-specified rating that identifies the highest round the helmet is capable of stopping along with the tested velocity in both m/s and fps. Each RR helmet is rated to its own specific threat level rather than a standardized tier.
Important: RR ratings do not account for BFD (Back Face Deformation). Even if the helmet stops the round from penetrating, the inward deformation of the shell can transmit enough force to cause serious or fatal blunt trauma to the wearer. A helmet stopping a round does not mean the wearer survives the hit.
Body Armor Protection Levels
HG1
HG1 formerly NIJ Level IIA / NIJ Level II
Soft armor. Entry-level handgun protection. 9mm FMJ 124gr at 398 m/s (1306 fps).
HG2
HG2 formerly NIJ Level IIIA
Soft armor. Highest handgun protection level. 9mm FMJ 124gr at 448 m/s (1470 fps) and .44 Mag JHP 240gr at 436 m/s (1430 fps).
RF1
RF1 formerly NIJ Level III
Hard rifle plate. Stops 7.62x51 M80 at 847 m/s (2779 fps), 5.56 M193 at 990 m/s (3248 fps) and 7.62x39 MSC at 732 m/s (2402 fps). Does NOT stop M855.
RF2
RF2 formerly no NIJ equivalent
Hard rifle plate. New level introduced in NIJ 0123.00. All RF1 threats plus 5.56 M855 at 950 m/s (3117 fps). Created specifically because M855 defeats RF1.
RF3
RF3 formerly NIJ Level IV
Hard rifle plate. Highest NIJ rating. Stops armor-piercing rounds including .30-06 M2 AP at 878 m/s (2880 fps).
Note on NIJ III+ and NIJ III++: These are NOT official NIJ protection levels. They are marketing terms created by armor manufacturers. NIJ III++ is commonly used for plates equivalent to or approaching NIJ Level IV (RF3). In GZW the game uses these marketing designations. NIJ III++ in-game corresponds to NIJ Level IV (RF3) in the real standard.
